Jerry Jones doesn’t see big gap between Cowboys, Eagles

Jerry Jones is having a hard time distinguishing his team from its rival.

When asked how Philadelphia managed to win its first Super Bowl title in two years time while Dallas has strived for its first championship since 1995, the Cowboys owner felt the need to amend the timeline.

“I’d like to think that Philly closed the deal of where we had an opportunity to do it the year before.”

The Cowboys went 13-3 in 2016, while the Eagles finished 7-9 for second in the division and missed the playoffs. But that all changed in 2017 as Dallas went 9-7 and Philadelphia finished 13-3 for first in the division before beating the Patriots in Super Bowl 52.

The Giants signed Mauro, 27, to a one-year deal reportedly worth $880,000. The defensive end spend the past four seasons with the Cardinals and compiled a career-best 32 tackles in 2016. He finished the 2017 season with 22 tackles, starting seven games.

“I want to thank the entire Giants organization for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to compete and help bring another championship to such a storied franchise,” Mauro said. “I look forward to overcoming this adversity I’ve ultimately brought upon myself and will do everything I can to contribute to this team winning football games.”

Yu Darvish also bounced back from a rocky debut with the Cubs, striking out nine over six crisp innings. Maddon felt the right-hander got into a rhythm.

“Everything becomes sharper,” Maddon said. “I’m certain it’s a feel thing for him.”

The following day, Apple denied that the conversations ever occurred.

“There’s only just one corner that … needs to grow, and we all know who that is,” said Collins, one of the more popular players in the locker room. “That would be the only person I would change out of our secondary group. Besides, the other two guys, [Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie] and [Jenkins], I love those two guys. They play hard. They love what they do.cardinals_097

MLB says percentage of black players highest since 2012

The percentage of black players from the United States and Canada on opening-day active rosters rose to 8.4 percent, its highest level since at least 2012.

Major League Baseball attributed the increase at least partly to its efforts to increase baseball youth participation with programs that include Urban Youth Academies and Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI).

It’s been a huge investment for us, Renee Tirado, MLB’s chief diversity and inclusion officer, said Monday. Obviously growing the game amongst our players is a priority, so that uptick has definitely been from a concerted effort.

About 150 players who attended the Compton Academy have been drafted and a dozen have reached the major leagues, including Aaron Hicks and Khris Davis. Pitcher Hunter Greene, selected by Cincinnati with the second overall pick in last year’s amateur draft, started at Compton when he was about 7.

We have all these players that have made it to the major leagues on our outfield wall at the Compton Academy, said former Los Angeles Angels general manager Tony Reagins, now MLB’s executive vice president of baseball and softball development.

Twenty percent of first-round draft picks from 2012-17 were African-American. In another effort to increase participation in more than a dozen youth programs, MLB launched a Play Ball initiative for young players three years ago, shortly after Rob Manfred succeeded Bud Selig as commissioner.

It’s translating, Tirado said, but it’s a marathon, not a race.

Mr. Kelly continues to make solid progress in his recovery from extensive surgery for his oral cancer, Urken said. He has been moved out of the intensive care unit and made that transition by walking, on his own, from the unit to the inpatient floor where he will continue the next phase of care. He is still several days away from resuming swallowing and taking nutrition by mouth.

Kelly, 58, underwent a 12-hour procedure March 28 to remove oral cancer and reconstruct his upper jaw. He was first diagnosed with cancer in his jaw in 2013, and had surgery, then underwent a second surgery in 2014 when doctors found the cancer had spread to his nasal cavities. He announced last month the cancer had returned.cardinals_130

Falcons bringing quarterback Tanner Lee in for a visit

Each NFL team gets to bring 30 players in to its facility for pre-draft visits. Each NFL team gets to pick, on average, seven players.

So while it’s easy to overstate the importance of each of the individual visits, some of them are at least worth filing away for future consideration.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Falcons are bringing in Nebraska quarterback Tanner Lee for a visit.

From a categorical rotisserie head-to-head standpoint, Ohtani is now absolutely worthy of the No. 73 overall ADP (75.5) that represented his preseason high point on March 7, which is roughly where he’ll move this week in my rankings. He’s a top 20-capable fantasy starting pitcher you should slot in for all of his mound assignments, and assuming you don’t have a clearly superior utility option on the dates that he’s slotted at DH, he’s worth activating at DH, especially against right-handers.

Oh, but if he’s pitching in a National League park and therefore slotted into both roles and forcing you to choose, take the pitching stats … they’re still his ticket to stardom.

The Dolphins had just upset the Patriots on a Monday night in Miami, a win that seemed to potentially get a rocky season on track. The loss at Buffalo sparked a three-game slide that sealed the team’s fate for 2017.

Gase’s comments represent a more specific twist on a concept he seemed to agree with during a conversation at the league meetings in Orlando. The adversity that the Dolphins faced throughout the 2017 season made it easier for Gase to determine who is and isn’t fully on board. Moving forward, Gase surely wants more of the guys who will be all in no matter what, and fewer of the guys who won’t be.

Warner quarterbacked in the Arena and NFL Europe leagues, honing the skills that forged what became a Hall of Fame career. Vinatieri’s induction as just the third HOF kicker is a given once he’s done playing. He, too, is an NFL Europe grad, along with others who parlayed the experience into NFL success, such as Brad Johnson, Jake Delhomme, Jon Kitna, David Akers and Dante Hall.texans_089

Nat Berhe agrees to deal with Steelers

Free agent safety Nat Berhe has come to terms with the Steelers, he announced on Twitter.

He visited Pittsburgh this week.

Berhe, 26, spent his first four seasons with the Giants after they made him a fifth-round draft choice in 2014.

He played 15 games last season, making two tackles and a sack. In his career, he has played 38 games with two starts, making 35 tackles, a sack and forcing a fumble.

Meanwhile, Smith still wants to sell her third of the team. As PFT explained recently, some potential buyers have been interested, with at least one coming very close to closing the deal. Ultimately, however, no one has been willing to purchase the asset — possibly due in large part to the inability to establish a path to control.

With Strunk securing control under an apparent deal that consists of eventually giving control to Kenneth IV at some point in the future, no buyer of Smith’s 33-percent interest in the team would have any chance to eventually have any say at all over how the team is run. Which means that Smith could remain involuntarily stuck with her third of the team, indefinitely.

The fact that these issues haven’t impacted the management or performance of the team is admirable. Still, it continues to feel like the Titans are sitting atop a bomb with a very slow-moving fuse that the league could shorten considerably whenever it wants.

And make no mistake about it — Jackson has decided to go without an agent simply because he believes that there’s nothing for an agent to do when the time comes to negotiate a contract.

“I know coming in as a rookie, an agent doesn’t really negotiate anything,” Jackson told Jarrett Bell of USA Today. “You’re going to get the salary you’re going to get. I decided I don’t need him. He’s going to be taking a big cut out of my paycheck . . . and I feel I deserve it right now.”

It’s a horribly short-sighted and ill-informed decision, overlooking the fact that a good agent can get a player drafted higher than he otherwise would have been drafted, and paid more than he otherwise would have been paid. As part of this effort, a good agent can fend off the efforts of other agents to promote their own clients while knocking other players. (And, yes, that happens all the time.)

A good agent also can handle external threats to a player’s draft fortune. When Bill Polian was pushing the notion that Jackson should switch to receiver, a good agent could have tracked down Polian, explained to Polian that Jackson would not be moving to receiver, and politely asked Polian to knock it off. (And if politely didn’t work, a good agent would have handled the situation impolitely.)patriots_120-223x223

You could argue Newton’s Super Bowl performance was as much a result of Denver’s pass rush as it was Newton himself.

  • The 2015 NFL MVP turned in a season-low completion percentage (43.9) and passer rating (54.6), and overthrew receivers 10 times (a Super Bowl record). He looked stunned by the Broncos defense, which sacked him a season-high six times (two resulting in fumbles) and allowed him to convert only four of 15 third-down attempts.

Still, Carolina had an opportunity to win, down 16-10 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. But Newton’s second fumble at his own 25-yard line — one he chose not to jump on — sealed the game. The Broncos recovered and scored, winning 24-10.

Theismann followed up an MVP season in 1983 with a decidedly non-MVP Super Bowl performance in January of ’84. The Redskins QB set the tone — a bad one — in the first half by completing only 6 of 18 passes for 78 yards against the Raiders.

“Yeah, that was not planned or anything,” Gronkowski said afterward, wearing the world’s worst poker face. “We got yelled at. We’re not allowed to talk about celebrations. That’s what we got told. But I kind of want to talk about it, but I kind of don’t because I’ll get in trouble, so I don’t know what to do. So, it just happened on the spot. It wasn’t planned. We’ll just keep it there.”

Some NFL players have found inspiration abroad. For years, European soccer stars have scrawled messages on shirts worn under their jerseys, revealing the words after scoring a goal. On Thanksgiving, Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen recorded a sack, peeled away from the pile and yanked down a white T-shirt emblazoned with a message: “I just had a baby boy, what should we name him?” (Days later, Griffen revealed he and his wife, Tiffany, had decided on Sebastian Gregory.)

Jones: The Redskins have made this hard on themselves. Their roster is constructed in more of a win-now mode. That’s why they need to keep Cousins, and get a long-term deal done. Swallow their pride and open up the checkbook. It makes sense to draft a quarterback as insurance for 2018. But like you said, there are talented prospects that will come out next year. They could get away with waiting. However, if Pittsburgh’s Nathan Peterman was sitting there in the third round, I think he’d be worth considering.jaguars_038

The Golden State Warriors are not concerned with the Houston Rockets after losing the season series tiebreaker in a 116-108 loss Saturday night at Toyota Center.

Houston won the series 2-1. If both teams end the season with identical records, the Rockets would get the higher seed and home-court advantage should they meet in the postseason.

“No,” Kevin Durant responded when asked if it mattered. “The season starts over when you’re in the playoffs anyway, so it doesn’t matter. You’re going to have to get through these teams to get to where you want to go. You have to play at home and on the road, so it really doesn’t matter. We just want to be playing good basketball when it comes down to that point.”

Jenkins has come under criticism from some NFL players, including the Dolphins’ Thomas, for not communicating well enough with his peers while negotiating with the league and for effectively selling out the protest movement to a league that wants nothing more than to stop the demonstrations as soon as possible. He recently rebutted those accusations in a statement in which he said that “it was never about the money or having our voices bought,” adding, “To hear people call me or anyone else a sellout is insulting.”

“It has been my goal for the past two years to raise awareness about some important social injustices that plague our country,” Jenkins said. “The PEOPLE who have been unjustly disenfranchised by our criminal justice system and the PEOPLE who daily fight for them always have, and always will be, the inspiration and focus of my efforts.”

Oklahoma star Trae Young said he heard the critics after committing 19 turnovers during a pair of road losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma State last week. But Young reminded the naysayers that he’s still a freshman who is adjusting to his role.

Before Week 12, Brady appeared on the Patriots’ injury report with an Achilles’ issue. The injury coincided with Brady’s relative downturn, particularly against pressure and throwing deep passes. A statistical breakdown shows Brady passed deep with less frequency as the season wore on, but still at a higher rate than average.

In the season’s first seven games, Brady threw deep more often than any quarterback in the league — and more often, by far, than at any point in his career, according to Pro Football Focus. Brady threw a pass at least 20 yards in the air — the barrier PFF uses for deep passing — 40 times, 15.3 percent of his throws, and completed 18.jaguars_020
