Broncos waive kicker Taylor Bertolet, defensive end Jhaustin Thomas

As rosters churn in the wake of the NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos trimmed a pair of players from their roster on Monday.

The Broncos waived kicker Taylor Bertolet and defensive end Jhaustin Thomas.

This draft is teeming with speedy, undersized cornerbacks. I have a friend whose shtick is to approach every bartender like it’s his first time in a bar and say, I’d like to try a beer. Ozzie Newsome still reaches draft weekend and says, I’d like to sample one of your Alabama defenders, please.

Kyzir White is a high-effort, high-character defender who played the Spur position for the Mountaineers. The Spur is basically a nickel linebacker or box safety, so you know what that means: White is a tweener, a hybrid, a specialized matchup defender, someone who doesn’t fit our outdated 3-4/4-3 positional nomenclature, even though he fits just fine on the modern football field where defenses are in nickel or dime personnel groups about 70 percent of the time. White throws his body around in run defense and can use his long arms and quickness to stick with tight ends in pass coverage.

Stave signed with the Vikings as an undrafted rookie in 2016 and has spent time with the Seahawks, Chiefs, Redskins and Jets as well over the last two years. He has not played in or dressed for a regular season game.

The Browns also announced that they have waived wide receiver Matt Hazel, defensive back Kai Nacua and wide receiver Kasen Williams. The Browns drafted two wide receivers and two defensive backs over three days in Dallas.

I profiled Kyle Lauletta in early April. He’s an exceptionally bright individual who actually majored in Leadership in college—don’t snicker, you communications majors; it sounds like a really cool, challenging program—and earned Senior Bowl MVP status after an impressive week. He’s a great decision-maker and short passer, but deep outs and long throws tend to die on him.colts_033

Colts sign Najee Goode

The Colts announced they have signed free agent linebacker Najee Goode.

Goode, 27, spent the past five seasons in Philadelphia. He started three games last season and played in the other 13.

In the team’s three postseason games in 2017, Goode made two solo tackles and four special teams stops.

The Broncos, Cravens said, are getting a player with both a new perspective and the same potential Washington once saw. Sitting out the season and getting well, he said, “wasn’t really about what I wanted, it was about what I needed to do. So now that I have a chance to play football and give it my all, it’ll never be taken for granted.

“I wanted a fresh start just because I didn’t like the way things happened. It wasn’t part of my plan. I never thought that at 22 years old I’d be at the house watching football instead of playing football. So the fact that the Broncos gave me this fresh start, this chance to basically create a new image of myself, I just can’t wait, and I’m thankful for the opportunity.”

“Everything is good, man,” Davis said, via the Buffalo News. “I’m making tremendous strides, tremendous progress. I’m on schedule to go, we’re going into OTAs next week. There’s no limitation, I’m able to do everything.”

Davis is expected to join Tre’Davious White in the starting lineup for the Bills, who were able to nab Davis despite interest from several teams in signing the two-time Pro Bowler.

The Grizzlies would match the franchise’s worst record (22-60) since the move to Memphis if they lose their final game.

“It’s disrespectful to say that guys are tanking and trying to lose, because those guys that are on the floor every night have something to prove,” interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff said, adding: “Every single night they’re giving their best effort. So you’ve got to give the guys that are out there on the court more respect than I think people give them credit for.”texans_125

Indians have Tigers by the tail

The Cleveland Indians have dominated the Detroit Tigers in recent years, and they will attempt to continue that domination Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series between the American League Central rivals.

Cleveland has won eight games in a row over Detroit, a streak that started last season and continued Monday night with the Indians’ 2-0 win in the first game of the series. Since the start of the 2016 season, the Indians are 28-10 (.737) vs. the Tigers.

Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin will make his second start of the season Tuesday night. It would be almost impossible for Tomlin not to improve on his first start.

Tomlin’s first start of the season, on April 3 vs. the Angels, was a disaster. He gave up more home runs than innings pitched.

In pitching eight scoreless innings in the Indians’ 2-0 win on Monday night, Corey Kluber held Cabrera hitless in four at-bats. On Tuesday night, the challenge falls to Tomlin.

Francona is more than mindful of the fact that Cabrera has a history of punishing Indians pitching.

He battled injuries last year, and I know he doesn’t get a lot of infield hits, so when he hits .300, he hits .300, Francona said. He’s certainly one of the better hitters of our generation.

The Tigers will go with Matthew Boyd, who will also be making his second start of the season on the mound. His first start was as good as Tomlin’s was bad. Although Boyd wast tagged with a 1-0 loss to Kansas City on April 3, he pitched six strong innings, allowing one run and four hits with a strikeout and no walks.

Last year, Boyd made four starts vs. Cleveland and was 1-2 with a 2.28 ERA. In nine career appearances vs. the Indians, Boyd is 1-4 with a 4.99 ERA.

Troy Vincent, the league’s executive vice president of football operations, told the Post the new rule would only require a player to control the football, and any slight movement of the ball detected via official review would not necessarily overturn the catch.

Slight movement of the ball, it looks like we’ll reverse that, Vincent told the Post. Going to the ground, it looks like that’s going to be eliminated. And we’ll go back to the old replay standard of reverse the call on the field only when it’s indisputable.cardinals_019

Gurley was asked whether Beckham personally expressed interest in joining L.A.

It would take a lot to pair OBJ and the Rams. First, L.A. would need to bowl over the Giants with an offer. Then New York would have to admit they’re in full-on rebuild mode and don’t want to pay Beckham for the long-term. Then the Rams would have to decide whether to give the mercurial but uber-talented receiver a massive contract extension.

Hmm, I don’t want to say all that, he said with a smile, per The Times. That’s my boy.

Unless sides pull the trigger on a massive, landscape-changing deal, that’s all Beckham and Gurley will be: boys, not teammates.

As a practical matter, the ultimate deadline arrives in Week One, when Bryant’s $12.5 million salary becomes as a practical matter guaranteed. But the Cowboys also assume the risk of owing Bryant his full pay for the year the moment he shows up for the offseason program, since that’s when any season-ending injury occurring on team premises would guarantee his pay. So the sooner they make a decision, the better. It could be that they’re going to wait and see who they may be able to get in the draft before making a final decision on whether to seek a pay cut, how much of a cut they want, and whether they’re willing to cut him if he says no.

It would take a huge haul to pry Odell Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants, but the team’s decision to not put the kibosh on trade talks will keep rumors flying.

The team rumored to be most interested in acquiring the game-changing receiver is the Los Angeles Rams. Sean McVay’s team is deep into all-in mode this offseason, and it’s believed its interest in possibly acquiring OBJ is real, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.patriots_083-223x223

Lions add free agent guard Kenny Wiggins

Allen Park – The Detroit Lions announced the signing of free agent guard Kenny Wiggins Thursday afternoon. Terms of the contract were not immediately known.

NFL to consider restoring’football move’ requirement for catch More The NFL is going back in time to try to define and clarify a legal catch. The league’s competition committee next week will recommend restoring the football move requirement for a reception, the same term it removed from the rule in 2015 in an attempt to make a catch less subjective and easier to officiate. Al Riveron, the NFL’s senior vice president of officiating, announced the recommendation Wednesday in a tweet. The competition committee will present to all 32 owners at the league meetings, which begin Sunday evening in Orlando, Fla. In March 2015, the league replaced the football move criteria for a catch by attempting to clarify what constituted such a move.

He explains: Under my previous contract with Seattle, I had no guaranteed money for 2018. In my new deal with the 49ers, I get a guaranteed $3 million signing bonus right off the bat and another $2 million if I pass a physical before November 11, which is the last day a team can bring a player off the PUP list. And in a sport where contracts aren’t fully guaranteed, money in hand is better than anything. So $5 million for just signing the contract and passing a physical is a big win for me.

Outside of this past season, I’ve never missed a game in my NFL career. So on top of my signing bonus and my $2 million base salary for 2018, we put incentives in the contract that will pay me more depending on how much I play — on both a per-game basis and a percentage of defensive snaps — as well whether or not I make the Pro Bowl or the All-Pro team. All in all, including my signing bonus, I could earn as much as $13 million for 2018.jets_064

Bears re-sign Pat O’Donnell

The Bears have re-signed punter Pat O’Donnell to a one-year deal, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. The pact is worth $1.5M, per Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (Twitter link).

New England, meanwhile, now?needs a healthy Julian Edelman in 2018 more than ever.

The move:?Former Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Bradford is expected to sign a one-year deal worth $20 million with $15 million guaranteed.?

Analysis:?Arizona is likely going to need a fallback plan, as Bradford played in just two games last year with a knee ailment that coach Mike Zimmer described to NFL Network as “degenerative.” If he is healthy, he could be a serviceable bridge starter. But general manager Steve Keim and first-year coach Steve Wilks need to invest in a young quarterback via the draft.

Former Seattle Seahawks?WR Paul Richardson agrees to a five-year, $40 million deal with the Redskins, per multiple reports.

Taylor, 28, spent the past three seasons with the Bills and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2015. He completed 62.6 percent of his passes and threw for 2,799 yards last season with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. He was briefly benched in favor of rookie Nathan Peterman before returning to the starting lineup as Buffalo clinched a playoff berth.

“What he did in Buffalo by leading them to the playoffs says a lot,” Jackson said. “This guy walks in the building having more wins than a lot of people in this building. So hopefully a lot of that goodwill will rub off on this organization.”

Clearly the Rams were focused on their defensive backfield this offseason. 4) Philadelphia Eagles Philly clearly prioritized upgrading their defense this offseason. The Eagles made one of the biggest trades of the offseason when they landed Michael Bennett from the Seattle Seahawks for a fifth-round pick and a wide receiver most people have never heard of. The defending Super Bowl champs already had one of the best defensive lines in football, so adding Bennett will make them that more dangerous. Speaking of the defensive line, they also signed Haloti Ngata to a one-year deal.ravens_018

Vita Vea is the NFL Draft’s most dominant interior defensive lineman, period.

I will say that I do have some concerns about injury risk with Vea because of how he plays right now, hip tossing 300-plus-pound men is bound to take a toll on you at some point. How will it affect Vea’s play if he can’t rely on his power to be successful?

The honest answer is nobody knows.

What I do know is right now, today, Vea looks like a damn monster on tape manhandling dudes who don’t appear to be used to getting manhandled. Unless something showed up in his medical evaluations, I’m pretty sure I would take a chance on his body holding up. Suh still hasn’t broken down and he still plays just as violently as ever, after all.

Vita Vea may have only been a name to me a few days ago, but now, after watching his film, I have to say he is the second-most physically dominant interior defensive lineman I have ever broken down, behind Aaron Donald. I watched four games of Vea kicking ass and taking names and I didn’t need to see another down to make that assessment. If a team needs an interior defensive lineman this year I don’t think they could do better than Vea and I haven’t even watched any other interior defensive linemen yet.

I just can’t imagine seeing anybody better this draft season.

Since I don’t have access to all-22 for college football games, I use the next best thing for my draft profiles and go to Draft Breakdown where they post the TV copy of a bunch of top prospects’ games already cut up and ready to go. For the purposes of this breakdown I watched Vita Vea play against UCLA, Oregon, Stanford, and Washington State Those represented the eighth, ninth, 10th, and 12th games on Washington’s schedule last season, respectively.

WR Ryan Grant, Ravens Editor’s note: Grant failed his physical and his Ravens deal is null and void, sources tell ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Grade: C In a two-day span in which fortune has smiled on midtier wideouts, Grant was no exception.

The Tulane product was always one of Jay Gruden’s favorites during his time in Washington, but it was also telling that the organization signed Terrelle Pryor to a one-year deal last year in lieu of promoting Grant into the starting lineup.

When Pryor bombed out, Grant assumed a larger role and posted a 45-573-4 line.packers_104

MLB 2018: White Sox rely on family culture as rebuild reaches next phase

“His energy is radiant,” Abreu said. “He has filled us with the confidence to go out and play the game the way the way it is supposed to be played.”

Hahn, too, speaks glowingly about his manager, and when Renteria talks about what he has valued in the rebuild, it is easy to see why.

This is a stacked team, and Cousins locks in the Vikings as one of the three favorites to come out of the NFC.

The only downside is that the Cousins deal might not allow them to keep everyone from that team around.

The Vikings have a bevy of budding young stars entering the final years of their respective deals, with Anthony Barr, Stefon Diggs, Danielle Hunter and Eric Kendricks all in line to become free agents at the end of the 2019 season.

Cousins almost surely left money on the table, but the structure of this deal doesn’t allow the Vikings to be flexible and push some of the cap hits into the future, when the cap will be higher and Cousins would likely be negotiating his next deal.

At the end of June 2016, Maples was demoted from High-A Myrtle Beach to South Bend in the Midwest League. That was his fourth season in the minors, and thanks to persistent command issues it was beginning to look like he’d mire there forever. But just over a year later, Maples had risen through three levels of the Cubs’ minor league system and was summoned to Chicago with 40-man roster expansion in September. He pitched sparingly, showing in his six appearances both what could make him great and what could sink him quickly.

The fiercest competition will come from the Dodgers and Nationals, but neither team can quite match Chicago’s newly constructed rotation. Even before its latest addition, the Cubs’ staff was comfortably in the top half in baseball. Though a top three of Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill and Alex Wood in Los Angeles, and Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez in Washington presents formidable opposition, adding Darvish makes the Cubs the team best equipped to win in 2018 especially in the playoffs.

Across the months of the regular season, perhaps having Darvish ups the Cubs’ win total by just a handful of games, but he will also help in a couple of ways that Chicago sorely needs: bullpen usage and walk rate.packers_120

The trade is expected to clear $10.44 million in 2018 cap space for the Bills, who had Taylor under contract through next season at $18.08 million.

The Browns will inherit a one-year deal for Taylor that includes a $10 million base salary ($1 million of which is fully guaranteed) and a $6 million roster bonus due March 16.

The fit here is a little curious, if only because Landry is a slot receiver and the Browns actually had a few options to operate there in 2018. Duke Johnson has quietly become an effective weapon as both a runner and receiver, posting a positive DVOA in both categories last season. The 24-year-old might very well have served as a regular slot receiver for the Browns next season if they hadn’t traded for Landry. With Johnson entering the final year of his rookie deal, it seems possible that Cleveland might not keep the Miami product around after this season.

“We’ll take phone calls up to the last minute,” Ballard said, according to the Colts’ official website. “We’ll be prepared to know the spots in the draft that we need to move back (to) and who the players (are) we are able to take and acquire if we do move back.”

The list of teams that could be wanting to move up to No. 3 include any team that is in the market for a new franchise quarterback. We’ll know more about those teams after the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes is settled and the process of free agency ends with quarterbacks like Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater getting signed, but for now, teams like the Broncos (who own the fifth pick) and the Jets (who own the sixth pick) could be in play if they miss out on their free agent targets and fall in love with a prospect.

A trade with the Broncos or Jets wouldn’t involve moving back too far in the draft order while trading with another quarterback-desperate team like the Bills or Cardinals would involve moving back to the mid-to-late portions of the first round.? Just a year ago, the 49ers traded back from No. 2 to No. 3 and still got the player they wanted (defensive end Solomon Thomas ) in addition to the Bears ‘ bundle of draft picks.?buccaneers_087

Rockies prospect, alleged Parkland shooter rode bus together for 3 years

All 30 MLB teams honored the victims of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla., by donning caps bearing the “SD” logo of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s baseball team.

The 20-year-old Welker, considered the No. 8 third base prospect in baseball by MLB.com, said he couldn’t believe the news when someone texted him. His family, which still lives nearby, has been keeping him up to date on events.

“The town is quiet, my mom told me. People are still affected by it,” Welker said. “It will get back to normal soon, hopefully.”

Other alumni of the suburban Miami high school in spring training are Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and Athletics minor league pitcher Jesus Luzardo.

Among the nicest tributes to shooting victims and survivors Friday in spring training, the Miami Marlins invited members of Stoneman Douglas High School’s baseball and softball teams to camp.

The reigning AL Rookie of the Year and newly acquired Giancarlo Stanton will likely split time at DH and a corner outfield spot once the season begins.

The next wave of precipitation rolled in around noon, as Ohtani was doing sprints in the outfield of Field No. 1, and by the time everyone moved to the batting cage on Field No. 2 we’d moved from light sprinkles to actual rain. Not heavy, but annoying. Not that anyone aside from media members trying to keep their equipment dry seemed to mind.

Ohtani’s batting practice, his first with the Angels, was a big damn deal. Angels GM Billy Eppler was there, and he had a hard time wiping the grin off his face. Manager Mike Scioscia was planted firmly with his arms on the back of the cage, and he spent most of BP smiling, too. Hideki Kuriyama, who was Ohtani’s manager with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan, watched from near the backstop (his Fighters are finishing up a spring training trip of their own, up the road in Scottsdale). The list of important, happy people went on and on.buccaneers_018
