Man shot at pool party promoted by Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie isn’t cooperating with police

Cornerback Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie, cut by the Giants last month, decided to wait to sign with a new team. While waiting, he hosted a celebrity pool party on Sunday night. A man was allegedly shot at the party.

Via Will Kennedy of the Tampa Bay Times, Hillsborough County deputies arrived at roughly 7:45 p.m. local time after a report of shots fired at the Clarion Inn and Conference Center in Brandon. No injured persons were discovered at the scene, but man later went to a local hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds. The man has refused to cooperate with the authorities.

It was a play Oklahoma State ran 70 times last season.

“I crushed it,” Rudolph said, “because it was basically the same play we ran except for different verbiage, different way to call it. So they understand that. People that watch film understand that. And I think the media’s going to catch up soon enough.”

Another prevalent criticism facing Rudolph is that, for all his measurables, he lacks elite velocity and arm strength. But he says those worries haven’t come up much in meetings — and that arm strength apparently isn’t as coveted in the NFL as many think.

East has never played a regular-season game.

He was with the team during the 2016 offseason program and training camp, appearing in three preseason games before being waived August 29. He spent time with the Chiefs in 2015 and the Seahawks in 2016.

Davillier said the lawsuit was filed after Temple demanded a payment that Beckham wouldn’t make, according to NFL Network.

The entire statement from Beckham’s lawyer can be read below:

This is getting old. The filing is full of falsehoods and misinformation, and Mr. Beckham’s legal team is fully prepared to vigorously defend against these outlandish and unsubstantiated claims. Mr. Beckham denies any business or other relationship with plaintiff, and further denies any wrongdoing whatsoever.texans_025

Sherman, Jed York unblock each other on Twitter after teaming up on 49ers

Richard Sherman and San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York are on good terms now, but that wasn’t the case three weeks ago when the cornerback was still a member of the Seattle Seahawks. As York explained Wednesday at the NFL owners meetings, there were some social media formalities that needed to be sorted out after Sherman joined the 49ers. We had to unblock each other on Twitter, York said, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

York declined to reveal what led to the decision to block one another. There’s just a level of competition and that competitive spirit, he said. I’m happy to be fighting alongside him. But there was definitely a rivalry. At the end of the day, football is a business, but you have to figure out can you work with people who have different perspectives and different histories. And with Richard, he’s going to come in and be the consummate pro.

Donte Moncrief, another member of the vaunted 2014 draft class, will potentially earn $3 million more than Beckham in 2018 despite never catching more than 64 passes in a season and failing to make a significant impact over the past two seasons. Julio Jones and Antonio Brown are the most common comparisons to Beckham, both in terms of quality and financial worth. However, Beckham is four years younger than both Jones and Brown – who earn $14.25 million and $17 million a year, respectively – and therefore warrants a deal that reflects his potential as well his production compared to receivers of a similar age.

Mikhail said Cravens was suffering from post-concussion syndrome after sustaining the head injury as a rookie.

Cravens played in 11 games and recorded 34 tackles in 2016 as an inside linebacker before his expected move to safety.

Houston’s coaches deserve credit for easing Watson’s NFL transition by playing to his strengths with a foundation of run-pass option (RPOs), traditional option, play-action and rolling pockets. That said, offenses overly reliant upon misdirection typically come with an expiration date at the highest level of football.

That’s not to suggest the Texans will eliminate the portion of the playbook that enhances Watson’s playmaking ability and rare instincts, but they will attempt to reduce the risk of injury while throwing fresh looks at opposing defenses.nike_broncos_045-500x500

Adam Gase: Lackluster effort against Bills led to changes

The Dolphins have made plenty of big changes to the roster this offseason. The changes were sparked in part by the team’s effort, of lack thereof, during a 24-16 loss to the Bills.

“That game at Buffalo just seemed like a 20-hour game,” coach Adam Gase recently said on The Joe Rose Show, via the Palm Beach Post. “I was just waiting for us to turn the corner and really get going and nothing was working for us. There was no swagger, no attitude, and it was disappointing to see. It wasn’t everybody. You turn on that tape, there are guys that stand out noticeably as far as their effort and their play that was extremely high, and they were giving everything they had. We just did not have enough guys doing that. That’s why we felt like we needed to change some things around.”

The NFL folded its overseas developmental model in 2007, which left a void for a spring/developmental venture that the league has declined to fill.

Polian laughed when reflecting upon the underlying reason for NFL Europe’s demise.

“The unfortunate part was that it was in Europe,” he said. “It was difficult for people in the United Sates to relate to it.”

The Falcons are among the teams that have generally kept just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, and they have a veteran backup in Matt Schaub hanging around.

So whether or not they’re ready to move on from the 36-year-old Schaub (who’s in the second year of a two-year, $9 million deal), the notion of a younger backup to Matt Ryan isn’t without merit.

It’s not like Ryan needs a veteran mentor or anything, and it’s not like anyone thinks Schaub’s leading them to the playoffs if something awful happens to their starter. So taking a look at a late-round prospect like Lee could make some sense on a team with a number of young players who will be wanting contracts in the future (including Ryan). Or maybe they start keeping a third quarterback on the 53, and (NERD ALERT) let Schuab play Obi-Wan to some kid with a high midichlorian count.

Whether Lee’s the guy to make them think about such a plan or not (we don’t always hear about all the visits), it’s at least interesting that the Falcons are thinking about the future at the position.texans_078

The Seahawks are in a similar situation.

Gettleman and the Giants already traded Jason Pierre-Paul to the Buccaneers for loose change and are moving on from many of the big names they splurged on over the last two years. If they trade Beckham, even for a fistful of draft picks, they might as well make Quitting on Talent the team’s 2018 motto.

Granted, much of the talent quit on the Giants last year. It makes sense for a 3-13 team to shed some salary and move on from older players.

Their veterans grew expensive and cantankerous in the years since their championship, making a reboot inevitable.

The problem comes when a rebuilding team starts giving away its best rebuilding blocks, as the Giants are itching to do with Beckham and the Seahawks did with Richard Sherman, because they convince themselves that the locker room needs an attitude adjustment. That’s how teams either get stuck in endless rebuilding cycles or become mediocre for years, waiting for the stars to finally align and make everything perfect.

In their quest for alpha dogs, the Dolphins have added four players over 30, an edge-rusher who hasn’t tallied double-digit sacks since 2014 and a 35-catch-per-year slot receiver to replace their 100-catch-per-year slot receiver. They got older and less talented after a 6-10 season and are hailing it as progress. They’re poised to go 5-11 this year—but very professionally.

The Bills have been playing mad scientist with their team chemistry since head coach Sean McDermott and GM Brandon Beane arrived last offseason. The new regime traded offensive starters Tyrod Taylor, Sammy Watkins and Cordy Glenn for draft picks over the last two years. They’ll spend the next month trying to trade those draft picks for one really high draft pick. They’ll use that really high draft pick to draft a quarterback who will have no one to throw to and a depleted line protecting him. At least McDermott will have a locker room full of his type of guys, most of whom are defensive linemen and linebackers.

The cap-rich 49ers then added Richard Sherman, Weston Richburg and Jerick McKinnon in free agency, and they’ll have a chance to bring in more talent with a top-10 pick in the draft.

But there were clues that the Niners were better than their results prior to that late-season dash. When San Francisco started the 2017 campaign 0-6, five of those losses came by three points or fewer, and two came in overtime. They could have easily started 3-3 or even 4-2, which means they seriously could have been a 10-win team had Garoppolo been the starter from the get-go.

This team is even better than that one, and the Cardinals and Seahawks have both taken steps backward. Don’t be surprised if Kyle Shanahan’s squad makes a playoff run in 2018.patriots_174-223x223

Cardinals fans should be closely monitoring whether Sam Bradford makes it through the team’s physical exam.

It might be the best pass he has all year.

Within their division, the Cubs will probably have a tougher fight against the Brewers and Cardinals than they did in 2017. Both teams improved significantly this offseason, but probably not enough to upend Chicago even before the addition of Darvish.

The touchdown rate will regress toward the mean, though, and Richardson might very well be built to excel within the never-ending plays and scrambling of the Russell Wilson universe.

Of his six touchdowns, four came after Wilson held onto the ball for four seconds or more.

Nobody else in the league had more than two such touchdowns, and that was only true for four other receivers.

Injuries are also a concern, given that Richardson’s left knee has been through a torn MCL and two torn ACLs.

In a market in which teams seem desperate to overpay midtier wide receivers, though, Washington is giving the 25-year-old Richardson a five-year, $40 million deal with $20 million in guarantees.

Instead, the Mariners will go forward with what they have. The starters will be backed by a bullpen that now features Juan Nicasio and a full season of David Phelps, which should help. The formula had better work. Because of the tumbleweeds on the farm, it will be extremely difficult for Dipoto to make a meaningful upgrade should the Mariners find themselves in relative contention near the trade deadline. Even reaching that point may be a tall order, given the overwhelming strength of the Astros and the fancy new toys of the Angels.

If the Mariners don’t contend this season, Seattle may be looking at a long rebuild. Cano is coming off his worst offensive season by OPS+ since 2008. Hernandez’s performance is declining, and all the mileage on his body may be showing. Neither one is getting any younger. Nelson Cruz is in the final year of his contract. The only meaningful help on the way may be in the form of Kyle Lewis, who has lost time to a bad knee injury and has yet to play above A-ball. If the Mariners are in the middle of the pack come July, they’ll be at a crossroads.

QB Drew Brees, Saints Grade: B There was never any realistic likelihood of Brees leaving the Saints, given that the 39-year-old and his family have been settled in Louisiana for more than a decade, and he finally got some defensive help last season. ravens_153

NFL mourns death of Saints owner Tom Benson

New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson passed away ?on Thursday at the age of 90. He passed away peacefully Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans with his wife Gayle Marie Benson at his side. Mr. Benson was hospitalized with the flu Feb. 16.

The National Football League, its teams and players expressed condolences over Benson’s death:

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell:

The Philadelphia Eagles are adding another defensive lineman to the stockpile. Haloti Ngata signed a one-year deal with the Super Bowl champs.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported the former All-Pro visited with the Eagles on Thursday.

Trump had said at the outset of his administration that he wanted to improve the disastrous U.S. relationship with Russia that he inherited from the Obama administration, a foreign policy goal that could help the United States achieve its own objectives in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Russia’s role in the election quickly overshadowed the relationship. Trump claims there was never any collusion between Moscow and his campaign, but critics say his anger over what he has called a “witch hunt” has colored the administration’s larger approach to Russia.

Max Bergmann, a former Obama administration official who heads the investigative Moscow Project at the Center for American Progress, called Thursday’s sanctions “a baby step” that does not suggest the administration intends to use much of the authority it has to go after Russian interference.

But he landed in the same defensive scheme as that of the Seahawks, still got well compensated at $13 million per season coming off a ruptured Achilles in his age-30 season and gets to exact revenge on Seattle while playing for its rival down the coast. That’s a win.canucks_037

Rays prospect Brent Honeywell has ‘successful’ Tommy John surgery

Right-hander Brent Honeywell won’t be making his major-league debut any time soon.

The Rays prospect underwent successful Tommy John surgery and will be out the entire 2018 season.

Ramos suddenly becomes arguably the best backup catcher in the league. He can mash the ball and should be a fun bat off the bench if the manager doesn’t mind pinch-hitting with his second backstop. Arroyo can theoretically play a bit of shortstop, as well as back up at second and third. Ideally, he’d be getting everyday plate appearances somewhere, but, well, desperate times and all that. Dietrich can be a bit of a super-sub at all four corner spots. Smith provides blistering speed off the bench, and the ability to play all three outfield positions. He’s an excellent pinch-runner or late-inning defensive replacement. And sure, he can make a lot of contact, but just don’t expect him to do much with it, as he has almost no power whatsoever.

“I think it’s the understanding of when … the training staff lets me go and it’s time to play, you only want to come off the DL once,” Murphy told reporters Tuesday, via ESPN. “I don’t want to start playing games and then have to stop.”

Murphy — who batted .322 in 2017, good for second in the National League — underwent debridement and microfracture surgery on his right knee in mid-October and has been rehabbing since. He has yet to run at full speed and is currently not allowed to swing a bat.

New Washington manager Dave Martinez is not looking to hinder his star second baseman’s progress by putting him the lineup too early.

“I’m more concerned about rushing him and him not being fully ready,” Martinez said. “When we get him back, we don’t want him to go back on the DL, we want to get him back for the whole season.”

Murphy, 32, would not commit to being ready on opening day, but he is satisfied with his progress.seahawks_120_bf61fe15fd391e59-180x180

After Ware left to join the Denver Broncos in 2014, the Cowboys drafted Lawrence in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft .

They followed that pick with Randy Gregory in the second round in 2015 and Taco Charlton in the first round in 2017.

The Cowboys also signed free agents like Greg Hardy and Jeremy Mincey to add to the pass rush.

The book is still out on Charlton, but even after Lawrence’s emergence, the Cowboys finished 15th in the NFL in sacks and will need to continue to search for more help on the defensive line.

And he’s not alone. The 25-year-old Franco is entering his third full season in the majors, and despite a significant drop-off on offense from 2016 to 2017, his struggles last year were largely caused by flailing at sliders during the first two months of the season. Franco’s bat stayed rather cold until late May, and then things gradually improved — though he still finished the season hitting just .186 against the slider and whiffing at the pitch nearly 20 percent of the time. Franco has some work to do there, but despite his other shortcomings at the plate he still hit 24 home runs in 2017 and upped his walk rate while dropping his strikeout rate from the previous year.

Landry has racked up receptions at a ridiculous rate, but the rest of his numbers leave a bit to be desired.

According to Pro Football Focus , Landry played out of the slot on 64.8 percent of his routes in 2017 — down from 72.7 percent in the season prior. That’s why, despite the fact that he led the league in receptions, he was 17th in receiving yards with 987. He has, for the majority of his career, racked up receptions underneath for short gains.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Golden Tate played in the slot at an even higher rate than Landry and not many are complaining about his contributions with the Detroit Lions . But Tate has a contract that averages to $6.2 million per year. seahawks_101_b94ac26f9a2c4d13-180x180

LeBron James, Kevin Love joke about who was taken last in NBA All-Star draft

No one knows anything for sure about who was taken first in the inaugural NBA All-Star draft, but based on Russell Westbrook’s reaction, one person thinks the reigning MVP is “crazy.”

Westbrook thought he had been selected in the last spot on Thursday when he saw the list released on Uninterrupted’s Twitter account. He then went out and scored a season-high 46 points in the Thunder’s win over the Wizards.

The Stars, currently in the first wild card spot, lost for the second time in as many nights after falling in overtime Monday night.

“We’ve just going to have to move forward,” Klingberg said. “We can’t be frustrated. We’re still right in the mix there. We’ve still got the wild card spot. We’re just going to have to move on and find a way to score more goals.”

Kari Lehtonen made 32 saves for Dallas.

Mike Fisher was in the starting lineup for his first game back in Nashville since being signed on Feb. 26. He received an ovation 10 seconds into the game during a stoppage in play while a catfish was removed from the ice. Fisher went to the box for hooking less than 2 minutes into the game.

Chalk this one up to another weird injury report.

The Celtics announced Friday, Marcus Smart will be out two weeks due to lacerations he sustained on his hand from a non-basketball injury.

This in and of itself is not weird, but when Smart apologized to fans for hurting himself, that is when things got bizarre.lions_032

Michael Lorenzen seeking consistency in bid to make Reds’ rotation

Michael Lorenzen is getting inconsistent results as he tries to win the fifth spot in the Cincinnati Reds’ rotation after being used exclusively out of the bullpen the past two seasons.

The right-hander has made two solid appearances and one wild one during spring games, which hasn’t helped his cause. He has a few more chances to make his case for a move back to the rotation. The alternative is to open the season as a middle-inning reliever.

“It’s about what you’re going to do about it,” Lorenzen said. “It is about whether you make the most out of your own situation.”

“I don’t know what it was, but I know it wasn’t right,” Lorenzen said.

He worked on his delivery during his throwing sessions the next few days and was better in his following appearance, allowing one hit and no walks in two scoreless innings.

“First, you figure out what it is, and then every time you throw a ball, you work on it,” Lorenzen said. “It comes from understanding what [it] is that’s causing you to be out of sync, then getting the habit out of you and retraining your nervous system to be in sync.”

Lorenzen was a center fielder at Cal State-Fullerton and closed games because he could throw hard. The Reds drafted him in 2013 and decided to turn him into a starter in the minors. During his rookie season, Lorenzen went 3-8 with a 5.92 ERA during a span of 18 consecutive starts, and the Reds moved him to the bullpen.

Thaddeus Young explained how Georgia Tech coaches introduced him and his classmates to basic terminology regarding, for instance, the defense of the pick-and-roll, such as blue and red. He also said he became prepared for the league away from the floor.

I think it just got me prepared mentally and physically for what this league is all about. lions_091The seasons are shorter, of course, but you still get acclimated to those plane rides, getting back and getting up and going to class, which will be like waking up and going to practice, Young said.

There’s different ways, different routes you can take to get to your path to going to the NBA, but for me personally I was very happy and pleased I had a chance to go and experience college and enjoy my time there. It was short, but at the end of the day I did take full advantage of what college had to offer.

Alas, the Hawks’ yard sale has not been the most popular on the block — slim pickings, as one scout said with a laugh on Friday.
