The Panthers looked like a team of destiny.

Little more than a decade after losing a heartbreaker in Super Bowl XXXVIII, Carolina seemed to have it all: an all-world quarterback in Cam Newton and a host of Pro Bowl defenders including linebacker Luke Kuechly and cornerback Josh Norman. But Peyton Manning went the way of John Elway and won himself another Super Bowl with a 24-10 victory, costing the Panthers the perfect ending to their incredible season.

The Redskins lost two games by a combined two points all season, and scored a then-record 541 points to garner a 209-point differential that was best in the league. But the 12-4 Raiders stunned Washington in Super Bowl XVIII with a 38-9 rout.

None of the Green Bay or Chicago players appeared to be kneeling during the anthem, a form of protest in which more than 200 players engaged on Sunday, when every NFL game was marked by anthem demonstrations. Reports from Lambeau indicated that most of the 81,000-plus fans in attendance did not link arms, as some saluted and many stood with their hands over their hearts.

“While there’s no greater country, it’s not perfect. Inequalities still exist, and we have work to do in ALL forms of social justice. We can all do better …. We’re a team and we stand together — no matter how divisive some comments and issues can be, nothing should ever get in the way of that. Starting Sunday, we’ll be standing together.”

Randall Cobb, WR, Packers: After seeing a steady dip in his numbers the past couple of years, Cobb opened the season with 12 targets, hauling in nine receptions for 85 yards. He followed that up with six receptions (nine targets) for 60 yards a week later against the Falcons, but was forced to leave that game and subsequently missed Week 3 with a shoulder injury. In Week 4, he caught four balls (four targets) for 44 yards and a touchdown. In Sunday’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, Cobb could be an intriguing play.

His prospects go up considerably if teammate Adams (see above) cannot play. Should Adams be in the lineup, Cobb may still be worth a play. In most rankings this week, he’s sitting somewhere between 25 and 30.jaguars_115

So much for the Browns enduring the ups and downs that come with a rookie starting at quarterback.

That supposed patience lasted for five games with DeShone Kizer, and now it’s on to Kevin Hogan as the starter. Will this franchise ever get it right at quarterback? …

With J.J. Watt’s season again cut short by an injury, it unfortunately is fair to wonder whether Watt’s days as a dominant player are done. He pushed his body so hard for so long. Has it caught up to him for good? …

Jalen Ramsey capped off the first playoff win for the Jaguars in 10 years, and the first postseason home win since Jacksonville sent Dan Marino careening into retirement on the heels of a 62-7 shellacking. (That is not a misprint.) Ramsey’s tip drill to himself was emblematic of a season in which the Jags’ defense delivered time and again — including at Heinz Field in October. This time around, Jacksonville shouldn’t anticipate Ben Roethlisberger throwing them two or three freebies, much less five, as this Sunday’s matchup could devolve into a run-a-palooza.

Le’Veon Bell has been a workhorse reminiscent of 1980s running backs, with 406 total touches this season. After the bye, though, he’s coming in rested. Leonard Fournette? Not so much. The rookie tailback hasn’t been running with his usual pop. In fact, Fournette has averaged 4-plus yards per carry in a game just once since Week 6. Wow.

Speaking of untrustworthy offenses, how can you believe in the Panthers after the last two weeks? Cam Newton and Co. looked completely lethargic against the Buccaneers, at home on Christmas Eve, with a playoff berth on the line. They would clinch against Tampa Bay thanks to a last-second touchdown from Cam, but it was an uninspiring effort.

This is a slap in the face to Doug Pederson’s squad, ranked No. 1 in the NFC by seed. But the Eagles lost Carson Wentz and the results from Nick Foles down the stretch have not been encouraging. He played well in his first game replacing Wentz, throwing for four touchdowns against the Giants, but was not impressive against the Raiders in Week 16 or the Cowboys in Week 17, when the Eagles failed to score a point.jaguars_085

You could argue Newton’s Super Bowl performance was as much a result of Denver’s pass rush as it was Newton himself.

  • The 2015 NFL MVP turned in a season-low completion percentage (43.9) and passer rating (54.6), and overthrew receivers 10 times (a Super Bowl record). He looked stunned by the Broncos defense, which sacked him a season-high six times (two resulting in fumbles) and allowed him to convert only four of 15 third-down attempts.

Still, Carolina had an opportunity to win, down 16-10 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. But Newton’s second fumble at his own 25-yard line — one he chose not to jump on — sealed the game. The Broncos recovered and scored, winning 24-10.

Theismann followed up an MVP season in 1983 with a decidedly non-MVP Super Bowl performance in January of ’84. The Redskins QB set the tone — a bad one — in the first half by completing only 6 of 18 passes for 78 yards against the Raiders.

“Yeah, that was not planned or anything,” Gronkowski said afterward, wearing the world’s worst poker face. “We got yelled at. We’re not allowed to talk about celebrations. That’s what we got told. But I kind of want to talk about it, but I kind of don’t because I’ll get in trouble, so I don’t know what to do. So, it just happened on the spot. It wasn’t planned. We’ll just keep it there.”

Some NFL players have found inspiration abroad. For years, European soccer stars have scrawled messages on shirts worn under their jerseys, revealing the words after scoring a goal. On Thanksgiving, Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen recorded a sack, peeled away from the pile and yanked down a white T-shirt emblazoned with a message: “I just had a baby boy, what should we name him?” (Days later, Griffen revealed he and his wife, Tiffany, had decided on Sebastian Gregory.)

Jones: The Redskins have made this hard on themselves. Their roster is constructed in more of a win-now mode. That’s why they need to keep Cousins, and get a long-term deal done. Swallow their pride and open up the checkbook. It makes sense to draft a quarterback as insurance for 2018. But like you said, there are talented prospects that will come out next year. They could get away with waiting. However, if Pittsburgh’s Nathan Peterman was sitting there in the third round, I think he’d be worth considering.jaguars_038

The Golden State Warriors are not concerned with the Houston Rockets after losing the season series tiebreaker in a 116-108 loss Saturday night at Toyota Center.

Houston won the series 2-1. If both teams end the season with identical records, the Rockets would get the higher seed and home-court advantage should they meet in the postseason.

“No,” Kevin Durant responded when asked if it mattered. “The season starts over when you’re in the playoffs anyway, so it doesn’t matter. You’re going to have to get through these teams to get to where you want to go. You have to play at home and on the road, so it really doesn’t matter. We just want to be playing good basketball when it comes down to that point.”

Jenkins has come under criticism from some NFL players, including the Dolphins’ Thomas, for not communicating well enough with his peers while negotiating with the league and for effectively selling out the protest movement to a league that wants nothing more than to stop the demonstrations as soon as possible. He recently rebutted those accusations in a statement in which he said that “it was never about the money or having our voices bought,” adding, “To hear people call me or anyone else a sellout is insulting.”

“It has been my goal for the past two years to raise awareness about some important social injustices that plague our country,” Jenkins said. “The PEOPLE who have been unjustly disenfranchised by our criminal justice system and the PEOPLE who daily fight for them always have, and always will be, the inspiration and focus of my efforts.”

Oklahoma star Trae Young said he heard the critics after committing 19 turnovers during a pair of road losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma State last week. But Young reminded the naysayers that he’s still a freshman who is adjusting to his role.

Before Week 12, Brady appeared on the Patriots’ injury report with an Achilles’ issue. The injury coincided with Brady’s relative downturn, particularly against pressure and throwing deep passes. A statistical breakdown shows Brady passed deep with less frequency as the season wore on, but still at a higher rate than average.

In the season’s first seven games, Brady threw deep more often than any quarterback in the league — and more often, by far, than at any point in his career, according to Pro Football Focus. Brady threw a pass at least 20 yards in the air — the barrier PFF uses for deep passing — 40 times, 15.3 percent of his throws, and completed 18.jaguars_020

Philly police prep for Eagles’ game by coating light posts with Crisco

The Philadelphia Police Department spent their Sunday morning greasing light poles near Lincoln Financial Field with Crisco.

They hope the tactic will prevent unruly fans from climbing the light poles following Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.

This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago, Schnatter added of the protests. Like many sponsors, we are in contact with the NFL and, once the issue is resolved between the players and the owners, we are optimistic that the NFL’s best years are ahead. But good or bad, leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership.

Minnesota had the No. 1 defense in total yards allowed, total yards per game and points allowed per game.

Philadelphia’s defense was fourth in total yards allowed and points allowed per game. Quarterbacks Nick Foles and Case Keenum have a formidable challenge on their hands in finding ways to score against those units.

What is a tougher challenge though is sifting through all the stats and facts leading into Sunday’s game, but our friends over at Opta are the best in the business. They compiled a ton of stats to get you prepared for this weekend’s games.

Philadelphia’s victory last week was the first home postseason win with more than two giveaways since Jan. 11, 1981. They had lost their last five postseason home games in which they turned the ball over multiple times.jaguars_008-223x223

NFL playoffs: Each remaining team’s chances of advancing to Super Bowl 52

The divisional round of the NFL playoffs was a real bracket-busting weekend, and AccuScore’s picks felt that pain. However, the team that our simulations predicted before the season to win the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots, is the lone survivor from last week’s predictions.

Our other predicted Super Bowl team, the New Orleans Saints, was bounced by the Minnesota Vikings’ miraculous last-second play that may go down as the greatest divisional playoff finish ever. It’s the first walk-off touchdown in the history of the NFL playoffs, after all.

That said, the Patriots are predicted to beat either the Vikings or the Eagles in Super Bowl 52. There is no big difference between Philadelphia or Minnesota as New England’s opponent; both have around a 40-percent chance to win against New England, meaning Brady and the Pats would walk into the Super Bowl as clear favorites.

One of the most interesting results in simulations is that if Jacksonville pulls the upset in Foxborough on Sunday and makes its first Super Bowl trip, the Jaguars are also predicted to be favorites against either NFC team. However, the possible matchup between the Jaguars and the Vikings is very close with Jacksonville having a 51-percent chance to win.

In an appearance on Denver’s 104.3 The Fan, McCloughan wasn’t holding back as he offered an evaluation of his former quarterback both the good and the bad.

He’s a good player, McCloughan said (via The Washington Post). Is he special? I don’t see special. But also, we were still building a roster around him to make him special.

McCloughan, the GM of the Redskins from 2015-16, did soften the blow, adding, I might not have been around [Cousins] long enough in terms of years from the standpoint I was around Brett Favre, Russell Wilson, Matt Hasselbeck, Alex Smith.

The Redskins’ finished this season 7-9 and didn’t make the playoffs, and McCloughan pointed to Cousins’ win-loss record in the NFL. He is 26-30-1 overall in games he’s started since his 2012 rookie season, and he’s 24-23-1 since taking over as the full-time starter in 2015. sabres_1102

Super Bowl 52 odds: Eagles open as biggest underdogs since 2009

The dog masks are going to Minneapolis with the Eagles as they find themselves the biggest Super Bowl underdogs since 2009.

Various sportsbooks have Philadelphia as a 5.5-, 6- and even a 6.5-point underdog against the Patriots in Super Bowl 52 in two weeks. That makes the Eagles the biggest underdogs since the Cardinals were 7-point underdogs to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.

Most military bases have loudspeakers to play To The Color when the flag is raised in the morning and Retreat when it is lowered in the evening. Regardless of whether a service member can see the flag being raised or lowered, they will stop and face in the direction of the music to salute. All outdoor activity on a military base stops when this bugle call sounds. Service members talking or exercising will stop. It they are driving a vehicle, they will pull over.

Wilks had a second interview with the Cardinals on Friday. Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores and Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo were the other finalists for the job.

Wilks, 48, just wrapped up his first season as a defensive coordinator, but has spent 11 seasons in the NFL as an assistant coach. He was previously with the Bears and Chargers before coming to the Panthers.

Before his time in the NFL, Wilks was an assistant coach for 11 years at the collegiate level, including stints at Notre Dame and Washington.

This is the second consecutive year Panthers coach Ron Rivera has seen his defensive coordinator leave for a head coaching job. Sean McDermott led the Bills to a 9-7 record and playoff berth in his first season in Buffalo.patriots_120_cc980a8ea4aa47b6-180x180
