Michael Lorenzen seeking consistency in bid to make Reds’ rotation

Michael Lorenzen is getting inconsistent results as he tries to win the fifth spot in the Cincinnati Reds’ rotation after being used exclusively out of the bullpen the past two seasons.

The right-hander has made two solid appearances and one wild one during spring games, which hasn’t helped his cause. He has a few more chances to make his case for a move back to the rotation. The alternative is to open the season as a middle-inning reliever.

“It’s about what you’re going to do about it,” Lorenzen said. “It is about whether you make the most out of your own situation.”

“I don’t know what it was, but I know it wasn’t right,” Lorenzen said.

He worked on his delivery during his throwing sessions the next few days and was better in his following appearance, allowing one hit and no walks in two scoreless innings.

“First, you figure out what it is, and then every time you throw a ball, you work on it,” Lorenzen said. “It comes from understanding what [it] is that’s causing you to be out of sync, then getting the habit out of you and retraining your nervous system to be in sync.”

Lorenzen was a center fielder at Cal State-Fullerton and closed games because he could throw hard. The Reds drafted him in 2013 and decided to turn him into a starter in the minors. During his rookie season, Lorenzen went 3-8 with a 5.92 ERA during a span of 18 consecutive starts, and the Reds moved him to the bullpen.

Thaddeus Young explained how Georgia Tech coaches introduced him and his classmates to basic terminology regarding, for instance, the defense of the pick-and-roll, such as blue and red. He also said he became prepared for the league away from the floor.

I think it just got me prepared mentally and physically for what this league is all about. lions_091The seasons are shorter, of course, but you still get acclimated to those plane rides, getting back and getting up and going to class, which will be like waking up and going to practice, Young said.

There’s different ways, different routes you can take to get to your path to going to the NBA, but for me personally I was very happy and pleased I had a chance to go and experience college and enjoy my time there. It was short, but at the end of the day I did take full advantage of what college had to offer.

Alas, the Hawks’ yard sale has not been the most popular on the block — slim pickings, as one scout said with a laugh on Friday.

Vrabel is the fastest riser in this year’s crop of new head coaches.

He only had one year of experience as the defensive coordinator of the Texans before the Titans tapped him to take over for Mike Mularkey. But ultimately, the 42-year-old players’ coach is in a good position for long-term success.

He inherits Marcus Mariota, who’s just 24, and a team that managed to make the playoffs this past season. After beating the Chiefs (who Vrabel once played for), the Titans then fell to another team Vrabel once played for, the Patriots.

Now the Titans want to build what the Patriots have, and who better to do that than a new head coach who spent eight seasons playing for Bill Belichick? They’ll have a full set of draft picks and just over $49 million in cap space to play with in free agency. As long as general manager Jon Robinson uses all of that capital wisely, Vrabel can succeed.

An Eagles win proves that anything is possible, and the individual — full of excitement and hope — is willing to share their life of joy with another. It’s critical in this step that one of the two people is holding a 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor to christen their love, and prove that no matter how wide the streets are, or how many ACLs are torn, that their belief in the Eagles (and each other) will get them through the tough times.

Martavis Bryant is a Pittsburgh Steeler and we want him to continue to be a Pittsburgh Steeler, Colbert told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. A lot of kids don’t make it back from a one-year suspension, but he did. We are not in the trade market for [Bryant].

The Steelers took a similar stance at the October trade deadline.

Bryant, a free agent in 2019, caught 50 passes for 603 yards and three touchdowns in 15 games last season. The Steelers have not discussed a long-term deal with Bryant, who was suspended for all of 2016 for multiple drug suspensions.

Bryant has been outspoken about his hopes of becoming a No. 1 receiver — which can’t happen in Pittsburgh with Antonio Brown — but after the season he expressed optimism for his role with the Steelers next season.patriots_018

Ben Simmons is another Australian already known for his passing ability in the NBA.

Their games aren’t necessarily similar, but the hype around Green could eventually reach Simmons levels by the time he is set to come out of college and the NBA phenom said recently that he’d reached out to the teenager.

“I know there’s somebody out here: Josh Green … I’ve reached out to him, and spoken to him, if he needs any advice or anything like that,” Simmons told foxsports.com.au back in December.

“Right now we’re finishing up our high-school season so I’m sure I’m really going to start thinking about what colleges I would like to attend, but I’m sure it’ll come eventually, but nothing coming soon.”

Celtics: Boston’s bench outscored Detroit’s 65-21. … Tatum was 4 of 4 from the field in the first half. … Stevens said Baynes has not been ruled out for Saturday night’s game at New York.

“Everyone had high hopes for us coming out of the break, but we didn’t live up to them tonight,” Drummond said. “We’ve got to go to practice tomorrow and figure out what is going on, because we have a lot of games coming up.”

The Pittsburgh Penguins made plenty of moves Friday night — on the ice, with the roster and in the standings.

Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin each had two goals and an assist and the Penguins moved into first place in the Metropolitan Division by routing the Carolina Hurricanes 6-1 for their season-best sixth straight victory.

Matt Murray made 27 saves for Pittsburgh, which has won 11 of 13 to overtake idle Washington for first place in the Metropolitan Division. Since the Penguins were shut out by Carolina on Jan. 4, they are 16-3-1.

“We’ve been playing good hockey here, and we need to continue to do that,” Crosby said. “Hopefully, we can stay with the pace here and keep going.”

Teuvo Teravainen scored and Cam Ward stopped 33 shots for the short-handed Hurricanes, who have gone 0-3-1 during a four-game slide that’s keeping them outside the Eastern Conference playoff race.jays_495_82c47616ea05a432-180x180

What happened the last time Minneapolis hosted the Super Bowl?

Minnesota hasn’t hosted a Super Bowl since 1992, the year Washington defeated the Buffalo Bills, 37-24, in Super Bowl XXVI.

Rypien, on the other hand, threw for 292 yards to go along with two touchdowns and one interception. Washington complemented Rypien’s efficient passing with an effective ground attack, running for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Rypien won Super Bowl MVP for his solid performance.

Brady clarified the situation, telling WEEI that Trump sent him the hat through Kraft. But he also expressed admiration for Trump and what he’s accomplished.

I mean it’s pretty amazing what he’s been able to accomplish, Brady said, via TIME Magazine. He obviously appeals to a lot of people, and he’s a hell of a lot of fun to play golf with.

Trump has tweeted about his relationship with Brady.

Congratulations to Tom Brady on yet another great victory- Tom is my friend and a total winner!

The Bruins also announced that rookie Anders Bjork underwent “successful left shoulder arthroscopy and labral repair” this week and the recovery time is expected to be six months.

Bjork was injured Jan. 30 when, early in a game against Anaheim, he ran into Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin and needed help off the ice. Bjork had also missed seven games after suffering a concussion after taking a big hit from Toronto’s Matt Martin.

The left winger has four goals and eight assists in 30 games.

The Bruins also traded center Frank Vatrano to the Florida Panthers for a 2018 third-round draft pick on Thursday.

Vatrano had been nursing a lower-body injury but had rejoined the Bruins and was skating in Toronto.

This will be the fourth meeting between the teams this season. The Bruins defeated the Maple Leafs 4-1 on Feb. 3 at Boston. The Maple Leaf defeated the Bruins and 4-1 in home-and-way games Nov. 10-11.bears_096-223x223

The NBA has always had somewhat of a global presence.

On Monday, Harper made it abundantly clear that he has no interest in discussing his contract status, instead choosing to focus on how he can help the Nationals — who are favorites to win their third straight NL East title — advance past the first round of the playoffs for the first time since moving to Washington, D.C., in 2005.

The league has had huge international players throughout its history like Yao Ming, Arvydas Sabonis, Dirk Nowitzki, and countless others.

During Friday’s game, we’re going to watch international talent like Bogdan Bogdanovic, Domantas Sabonis, Dillon Brooks, and other names we might not see all the time on League Pass or nationally televised games. It’s a great look for the NBA.

Hopefully, the league continues to build on its success.

The main reason Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan hasn’t been regarded as a success yet is found in 1-5. That’s Michigan’s record in games against Michigan State and Ohio State. The Wolverines have been agonizingly close, losing to Michigan State on the punt in 2015, to Ohio State in overtime in 2016, by four points to Sparty in 2017, and to 2017 Ohio State in another game Michigan led late.

Graham is already one of the highest-paid players in the league at his position so the tag would result in him getting 120 percent of his 2017 salary, which would mean a $12 million cap hit in 2018. The other possibility is Sheldon Richardson, but the tag for defensive linemen is even more expensive and the Seahawks just don’t have that much cap room to work with. It’s likely the exit door for both Graham and Richardson in Seattle.

Cornerback Brent Grimes is the interesting free agent decision looming for the Buccaneers after the 34-year old played out his two-year, $16 million contract and is headed to free agency. But Grimes is getting close to retirement and the franchise tag would be overkill to bring back an aging cornerback. There’s no reason for the Buccaneers to use the tag this year.

Gronk’s the best tight end in the league, and he’s one of the NFL’s best athletes in general. Plus, his laid-back personality just seems to fit the sport of snowboarding.

He sounds prepared for the slopes in this Facebook video of one of his offseason training sessions.

We’re killing this mountain, baby, Gronk yells. This mountain got destroyed by us!”bears_142

Mind you, this comes fresh off a similar stunt Mourinho pulled against Pogba in United’s appalling January defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.

  1. After the Red Sox were ousted in the ALDS for the second year in a row, ownership fired manager John Farrell and let go all but one member of his coaching staff (bullpen coach Dana LeVangie, whose contributions to the organization predated Farrell, was retained and promoted to pitching coach under new manager Alex Cora).

Other than that, though, the roster went nearly untouched, with the Red Sox re-signing first baseman Mitch Moreland and utility infielder Eduardo Nunez and not yet adding a player who wasn’t part of last year’s group. But both Henry and chairman Tom Werner insisted that, with Cora and his coaches setting a different tone, the Sox are talented enough to hold off the power-packed New York Yankees in the AL East.

I think we have the right team, Henry said. People don’t like us apparently saying we won the division the last two years, but we had the best offense in the American League the year before last. We had significant pitching that was injured last year. I think we are very strong and people are highly underrating this team. If we have the right approach, I think we’ll be very successful.

It’s unclear if he wanted Pogba’s abrupt substitutions to be the topic of media scrutiny instead of two embarrassing defeats in an 11-day span; but when the opportunity presents itself to place blame on someone else, Jose Mourinho is not at a loss for words.

I’ve always been an outgoing person, somebody that’s confident, somebody who has passion and energy for the game of football, and for whoever I’m playing for, I’m going to be passionate about it, said Mayfield, who broke his own single-season passing efficiency rating and threw for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns in 2017.

After the Sooners lost to Georgia in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual in the national semifinals, Mayfield stayed in the Los Angeles area and has spent most of his time there preparing for the combine and draft.

I swear, playing in front of all that, he gives up half a shot a day on the field, McIlroy said after he was able to rise above the bedlam and play himself into contention with a 69 to go with an opening-round 71. Like, it’s two shots a tournament he has to give to the field because of all that that goes on around.

Woods agreed, though the distractions come with the territory for the guy everyone wants to watch.bears_085

The Panthers looked like a team of destiny.

Little more than a decade after losing a heartbreaker in Super Bowl XXXVIII, Carolina seemed to have it all: an all-world quarterback in Cam Newton and a host of Pro Bowl defenders including linebacker Luke Kuechly and cornerback Josh Norman. But Peyton Manning went the way of John Elway and won himself another Super Bowl with a 24-10 victory, costing the Panthers the perfect ending to their incredible season.

The Redskins lost two games by a combined two points all season, and scored a then-record 541 points to garner a 209-point differential that was best in the league. But the 12-4 Raiders stunned Washington in Super Bowl XVIII with a 38-9 rout.

None of the Green Bay or Chicago players appeared to be kneeling during the anthem, a form of protest in which more than 200 players engaged on Sunday, when every NFL game was marked by anthem demonstrations. Reports from Lambeau indicated that most of the 81,000-plus fans in attendance did not link arms, as some saluted and many stood with their hands over their hearts.

“While there’s no greater country, it’s not perfect. Inequalities still exist, and we have work to do in ALL forms of social justice. We can all do better …. We’re a team and we stand together — no matter how divisive some comments and issues can be, nothing should ever get in the way of that. Starting Sunday, we’ll be standing together.”

Randall Cobb, WR, Packers: After seeing a steady dip in his numbers the past couple of years, Cobb opened the season with 12 targets, hauling in nine receptions for 85 yards. He followed that up with six receptions (nine targets) for 60 yards a week later against the Falcons, but was forced to leave that game and subsequently missed Week 3 with a shoulder injury. In Week 4, he caught four balls (four targets) for 44 yards and a touchdown. In Sunday’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, Cobb could be an intriguing play.

His prospects go up considerably if teammate Adams (see above) cannot play. Should Adams be in the lineup, Cobb may still be worth a play. In most rankings this week, he’s sitting somewhere between 25 and 30.jaguars_115

So much for the Browns enduring the ups and downs that come with a rookie starting at quarterback.

That supposed patience lasted for five games with DeShone Kizer, and now it’s on to Kevin Hogan as the starter. Will this franchise ever get it right at quarterback? …

With J.J. Watt’s season again cut short by an injury, it unfortunately is fair to wonder whether Watt’s days as a dominant player are done. He pushed his body so hard for so long. Has it caught up to him for good? …

Jalen Ramsey capped off the first playoff win for the Jaguars in 10 years, and the first postseason home win since Jacksonville sent Dan Marino careening into retirement on the heels of a 62-7 shellacking. (That is not a misprint.) Ramsey’s tip drill to himself was emblematic of a season in which the Jags’ defense delivered time and again — including at Heinz Field in October. This time around, Jacksonville shouldn’t anticipate Ben Roethlisberger throwing them two or three freebies, much less five, as this Sunday’s matchup could devolve into a run-a-palooza.

Le’Veon Bell has been a workhorse reminiscent of 1980s running backs, with 406 total touches this season. After the bye, though, he’s coming in rested. Leonard Fournette? Not so much. The rookie tailback hasn’t been running with his usual pop. In fact, Fournette has averaged 4-plus yards per carry in a game just once since Week 6. Wow.

Speaking of untrustworthy offenses, how can you believe in the Panthers after the last two weeks? Cam Newton and Co. looked completely lethargic against the Buccaneers, at home on Christmas Eve, with a playoff berth on the line. They would clinch against Tampa Bay thanks to a last-second touchdown from Cam, but it was an uninspiring effort.

This is a slap in the face to Doug Pederson’s squad, ranked No. 1 in the NFC by seed. But the Eagles lost Carson Wentz and the results from Nick Foles down the stretch have not been encouraging. He played well in his first game replacing Wentz, throwing for four touchdowns against the Giants, but was not impressive against the Raiders in Week 16 or the Cowboys in Week 17, when the Eagles failed to score a point.jaguars_085

You could argue Newton’s Super Bowl performance was as much a result of Denver’s pass rush as it was Newton himself.

  • The 2015 NFL MVP turned in a season-low completion percentage (43.9) and passer rating (54.6), and overthrew receivers 10 times (a Super Bowl record). He looked stunned by the Broncos defense, which sacked him a season-high six times (two resulting in fumbles) and allowed him to convert only four of 15 third-down attempts.

Still, Carolina had an opportunity to win, down 16-10 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. But Newton’s second fumble at his own 25-yard line — one he chose not to jump on — sealed the game. The Broncos recovered and scored, winning 24-10.

Theismann followed up an MVP season in 1983 with a decidedly non-MVP Super Bowl performance in January of ’84. The Redskins QB set the tone — a bad one — in the first half by completing only 6 of 18 passes for 78 yards against the Raiders.

“Yeah, that was not planned or anything,” Gronkowski said afterward, wearing the world’s worst poker face. “We got yelled at. We’re not allowed to talk about celebrations. That’s what we got told. But I kind of want to talk about it, but I kind of don’t because I’ll get in trouble, so I don’t know what to do. So, it just happened on the spot. It wasn’t planned. We’ll just keep it there.”

Some NFL players have found inspiration abroad. For years, European soccer stars have scrawled messages on shirts worn under their jerseys, revealing the words after scoring a goal. On Thanksgiving, Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen recorded a sack, peeled away from the pile and yanked down a white T-shirt emblazoned with a message: “I just had a baby boy, what should we name him?” (Days later, Griffen revealed he and his wife, Tiffany, had decided on Sebastian Gregory.)

Jones: The Redskins have made this hard on themselves. Their roster is constructed in more of a win-now mode. That’s why they need to keep Cousins, and get a long-term deal done. Swallow their pride and open up the checkbook. It makes sense to draft a quarterback as insurance for 2018. But like you said, there are talented prospects that will come out next year. They could get away with waiting. However, if Pittsburgh’s Nathan Peterman was sitting there in the third round, I think he’d be worth considering.jaguars_038

The Golden State Warriors are not concerned with the Houston Rockets after losing the season series tiebreaker in a 116-108 loss Saturday night at Toyota Center.

Houston won the series 2-1. If both teams end the season with identical records, the Rockets would get the higher seed and home-court advantage should they meet in the postseason.

“No,” Kevin Durant responded when asked if it mattered. “The season starts over when you’re in the playoffs anyway, so it doesn’t matter. You’re going to have to get through these teams to get to where you want to go. You have to play at home and on the road, so it really doesn’t matter. We just want to be playing good basketball when it comes down to that point.”

Jenkins has come under criticism from some NFL players, including the Dolphins’ Thomas, for not communicating well enough with his peers while negotiating with the league and for effectively selling out the protest movement to a league that wants nothing more than to stop the demonstrations as soon as possible. He recently rebutted those accusations in a statement in which he said that “it was never about the money or having our voices bought,” adding, “To hear people call me or anyone else a sellout is insulting.”

“It has been my goal for the past two years to raise awareness about some important social injustices that plague our country,” Jenkins said. “The PEOPLE who have been unjustly disenfranchised by our criminal justice system and the PEOPLE who daily fight for them always have, and always will be, the inspiration and focus of my efforts.”

Oklahoma star Trae Young said he heard the critics after committing 19 turnovers during a pair of road losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma State last week. But Young reminded the naysayers that he’s still a freshman who is adjusting to his role.

Before Week 12, Brady appeared on the Patriots’ injury report with an Achilles’ issue. The injury coincided with Brady’s relative downturn, particularly against pressure and throwing deep passes. A statistical breakdown shows Brady passed deep with less frequency as the season wore on, but still at a higher rate than average.

In the season’s first seven games, Brady threw deep more often than any quarterback in the league — and more often, by far, than at any point in his career, according to Pro Football Focus. Brady threw a pass at least 20 yards in the air — the barrier PFF uses for deep passing — 40 times, 15.3 percent of his throws, and completed 18.jaguars_020
